About the book

Marlowe's debut follows Ada Vessey, eighty-one, the last living resident of a decommissioned lighthouse station, as a young oral historian arrives to record her account of the 1953 flood. Ada has given this account many times. She is very good at it. Over eleven days of tape, the story she has polished for half a century begins to show its seams — not because she is lying, but because a story told often enough stops being a memory and becomes a place to live. Written in ninety-minute increments before dawn shifts, it announced a formidable new voice.

From Tape Three

You'll want the bit about the water, she said. They always want the bit about the water.

I said I wanted whatever she wanted to tell me, which was the sort of thing I said a great deal that year and did not entirely mean. Ada looked at the recorder, and then at me, with the particular patience of a woman who has been interviewed by better.

Then let's do the water, she said, and she began, and it was word for word what she had said to the county paper in 1988, and I sat there with my expensive machine and recorded a performance of a memory of a night.

Praise for A Country of Borrowed Light

“A debut of unusual composure. Marlowe arrived fully formed and no one noticed for two years.”
